A useful object completes a task and disappears into that completion. An artwork can do something stranger: it can remain present after its assigned task has failed. This is not a demand for obscurity. It is a demand that the material be allowed to answer back.
The obedient object illustrates an idea already settled elsewhere. The disobedient object introduces friction. A piece of paper buckles under paint, a recording admits the room around its subject, a rhythm makes the body count differently from the score. None of these events is automatically valuable. Their value begins when the artist notices that the work now contains a question the plan did not contain.
We should be suspicious of processes that make every decision look inevitable. They conceal the negotiation that gives a form its pressure. Better to leave one hinge visible: the cut that refuses to vanish, the repetition that becomes excessive, the material that will not hold the desired edge. Craft is not the removal of resistance. Sometimes craft is knowing which resistance has become the work.
