The Audience as Temporary Author

Interpretation participates in a work without acquiring ownership of it.

A viewer completes nothing. The work was not an empty form waiting for the correct person to supply its meaning. Yet every encounter produces relations that did not exist in exactly that way before: this memory beside that color, this room tone beside today's weather, this hesitation before the next cut.

Call the audience a temporary author if the phrase helps, but keep temporary in view. An interpretation can be powerful without becoming the work's permanent owner. Other readings remain possible, and the material continues to resist claims it cannot support.

This arrangement asks generosity from both sides. The artist leaves room without abandoning precision. The audience arrives with imagination without treating attention as possession. Meaning visits. The work keeps the address.
